OBESITY PREVENTION PROGRAMS
Wellspring students walk five miles a day. They are not fit enough to run when they enter the program. Parents pay a large sum of money to send their obese children there, but have miserably failed trying other methods. Kids are unhappy at the beginning of their program. They are closed off from the toxic environment. They don‘t have physical contact with friends, pets, television, video games, and can only eat food specially prepared for them. Each student wears pedometers and they log in their daily calorie food intake, 1,200 calories on average. They are allowed to consume more but must compensate by increasing their physical activity. Students start getting happier once they have begun to shed a few pounds.
Wellspring Academy opened a second boarding school in North Carolina, in 2006. The academy is owned by CRC Health Group. They promote 4 community programs, 14 U.S Summer camps and another in Britain. They plan to open schools in Texas, Massachusetts, Britain, and Canada. 1.6 million children need weight loss programs. Health care is only able to provide for 2000 of those children. Parents spend $5,950 dollars for a 4 week admission and $8000 dollars for an 8 week program. The average student attends 4 to 6 months. 9 month students lose an average of 81 pounds. The National Health Service provides financial assistance to needy families. The Department of Family and Social Services recommend that obese children attend the Wellspring Academy.

Activities at Wellspring Academy of the Carolinas
The scientifically-based Activity Management program ensures that Wellspring Academy of the Carolinas students achieve an unprecedented level of activity – starting at 10,000 steps per day (as measured on a pedometer), but often exceeding 20,000 (approx. 10 miles of walking).
An unparalleled range of activities are available at Wellspring Academy of the Carolinas. And on most weekends, students are off-campus on an adventure trip. A recent article in the International Journal of Obesity shows that adventure activities may be more effective for long-term weight control than traditional sports or activities.

Get Involved in Sports and Help Combat Obesity
Some kids are restricted from getting quality physical exercise. Many parents feel pressured by the level of progress their child makes at school. They feel intimidated by dangerous neighborhood surroundings . These concerns are understandable. However, restricting children to stay indoors at their writing desk, television set, and computer video game, is inviting another potential danger. A sheltered child is likely to become over weight and possibly obese. Over protective parents who are afraid their son or daughter might get injured at the playground only create another problem.
The healthy family benefits by participating in sports together. Young children need healthy role models and positive examples. Bike riding, jogging, swimming, individual and team sport participation are ideal physical activities that help keep everyone in shape. Consistent physical activity counters the bad effects of inactive time people spend on the computer or watching television. Adults should exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Children need at least an hour a day of physical activity.
Public or private schools that fail to make physical education a priority in their curriculum jeopardize children’s health and make them prime targets of obesity.
Public schools are criticized because they serve unhealthy food in the cafeteria and permit vending machines to offer carbonated soda and unhealthy snacks. Nutritional food promotion is overshadowed by unhealthy food promotion. Parents have to provide their children with a nutritional lunch sack and dinner. It is a frightening reality that more children are entering hospitals to undergo bypass surgery.
Our modern fast paced lifestyles encourage families to make bad decisions. Unhealthy fast food replaces the old fashioned traditional meal. Home cooked meals should not disappear from the dinner table. Healthy salads, vegetables, and fruits, should accompany every meal. The average family’s daily produce intake is far less than the daily recommended five fruits and vegetables a day. Raw fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber and water. They help to develop our digestive system. People need to experiment and taste as many groups of fruits and vegetables as possible.
Deserts are much more nutritious when they are made at home. Store bought pastries always have too much sugar and fat. Your home made cookie or cake can taste more appetizing because of its freshness and special ingredients. Great health food recipes for the main course and deserts can always be discovered on the internet or in your favorite book store.
Genetic predisposition affects certain children. They have high levels of fat storing enzymes that are called lipoprotein lipase. Research therapy treatment is focused on correcting and preventing genetic disorders. Homeopathy is the only medical therapy that successfully combats genetic predisposition. Constitutional remedies clinically treat patient health. They target the physical make up of the body and its metabolic process activity. Careful treatment provides patients strength to resist disease causing organisms. Constitutional homeopathic medicines are developed with two formulas. There are pre-formulated constitutional enhancers and homeopathic weight control medicines.
Jon Leibowitz, Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission, is an advocate for responsible food marketing to children and adolescents. In 2006, he helped create “The Alliance for a Healthy Generation.” The organization enforced several food and beverage companies to minimize competitive food sales that were purchased outside of the school meal program. Their plan promoted food products that are more nutritious and have less calories. The plan continues implementation. Positive results show a 58 percent decrease in total calories for beverages shipped to schools between 2004 and the 2007-08 school year.
A recent 2008 food marketing study discovered that television advertising needs to strengthen the nutritional profile of food and beverages that are marketed to children. Carbonated beverages, restaurant foods, and breakfast cereals, account for 63 percent of all youth directed spending. Motion picture marketing can have a negative effect on children if they are strongly promoting a food product that lacks nutritional value. The FTC recommends that all food and beverage companies develop positive nutrition-based marketing standards for children under 12 years of age.
NUTRITION-BASED PRODUCT PROMOTION SHOULD INCLUDE:
Internet
Mobile phones
Product placement
Event sponsorship
Character licensing
In-school marketing
School ambassadors
Celebrity endorsements
Philanthropic activities
